Witnessing Tip of the Month: "We Never Said That!"
by James Walker
Cult members are often shielded from more bizarre doctrines of their faith. They have not been told about doctrinal changes in the past or the inner-workings at the organization's headquarters.
Christians can profitably share these false prophecies, changing beliefs and doctrines with the cult member as strong evidence that their leaders do not truly represent God.
But when citing these examples, Christians are often surprised to find the cultist saying, "We never taught that doctrine!" or "Our leaders would never say anything like that!"
If the Christian can not then produce the evidence (a reference or even better, a photocopy of the document), then the cult member will assume that you are misinformed. They may even accuse you of lying!
It is so important to be able to show the cult member what their leaders have said.
Recently I told a Jehovah's Witness that I could not follow his leaders is that they had once taught that vaccinations were a sin and that they do not prevent small-pox. They later changed their minds and now promote vaccinations!
He smiled and said that the Watchtower would never make such a ridiculous statement and that I must be mistaken.
But when I showed him the copies (Golden Age 2/4/1931 p. 293-94 and Awake! 8/22/1965 p. 20) his confident smile turned to shock and dismay. These two photocopies opened the door to three hours of sharing additional scriptural and doctrinal errors of the Watchtower.
