SINGAPORE DENIES RELIGIOUS FREEDOM TO JEHOVAH'S WITNESS
Singapore authorities jailed Chan Cheow Kiang on 28 January 1996 for being a Jehovah's Witness. The Jehovah's Witnesses have been outlawed in the country since the 1970's because of their refusal to serve in the military. Evangelical Press reported Singapore officials claim the Witnesses are not covered by the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom of expression and propagation because they have violated a "...general law relating to public order, public health or morality." In the past Witnesses have been forbidden to assemble and distribute literature. Now the 1200 Witnesses in Singapore may face imprisonment for simply being there.
