Articles on Jehovah's Witnesses

Watchtower Teaches Double Standards

Craig Branch

The Watchtower Society's major articles are dealing with the emotional issue of how will one see again those who have died. Two articles in last month's Expositor responded to this false teachings of the Watchtower regarding the resurrection and the myth of a two class salvation. The focus of this article will be some of the double standards in the life of Jehovah's Witnesses. It was interesting to note that the Watchtower Society does believe that human life begins at conception and that abortion is murder (Watch¬tower, 6/15/89, p. 29). But they do not become involved in taking a public stand against this abortion.

Some time ago, this author observed a conversation between two Jehovah's Witnesses. The one Jehovah's Witness was asked by the other why Jehovah's Witnesses were never seen peacefully demonstrating their opposition to abortion? His curt response was "We don't believe in doing it this way, we go door to door proclaiming the kingdom," as if it were an either/or situation.

Yet it is interesting to note that in the same June 15 Watchtower, on page 15, a picture of a huge crowd of more that 1000 (Jehovah's Witnesses) is seen gathered in front of a police picket line at city hall in Manhattan, N.Y. They were there to put political pressure on the mayor to permit a new residence building at Watchtower headquarters.

The double standard is clear. They can get involved in politics and have a massive demonstration when it comes to the Watchtower business.

One last observation, on page 18 there are instructions about being well mannered in the door to door ministry. The Watchtower instructs to be "warm, friendly and respectful" even when they meet an unfriendly person at the door. Also they are instructed to "always be ready to make defense.... with a mild temper and deep respect" (1 Peter 3:15). They are even told not to dominate the conversation, but to be sensitive to the householder.

The staff at Watchman Fellowship has trained many Christians in how to kindly and lovingly present the very objective evidence that the Watchtower does not tell the truth. Yet seldom, if ever, have we seen a Jehovah's Witness respond with honesty and respect. They usually become hostile, defensive, and belligerent, refusing to honestly examine the facts.

We must continue to remind the Jehovah's Witness that truth never fears investigation, and that only one who is led by the Spirit can demonstrate love, joy, peace, kindness, gentleness, patience, self-control, and can "be ready to make a defense" during adversity.
