Historical Overview

1965 June: Dr. William Thetford and Dr. Helen Schucman "make a joint commitment to find a better way."

1965 Sept: Schucman tells Thetford she senses she will do "something very unusual."

1965 Oct: Schucman begins A Course In Miracles.

1972 Sept: Three volumes are completed.

1972 Winter: Schucman meets Dr. Kenneth Wapnick.

1975 June: Schucman gives the Course and its copyright to the Foundation For Inner Peace.

1975 Sept: First publication of the Course in manuscript form.

1976 June 22: The Course is published in three volumes.

1977: Schucman retires from Columbia University.

1978 Spring: Thetford takes early retirement from his position as Professor of Medical Psychology at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia Univ.

1981 Feb. 9: Helen Schucman dies in New York, NY.

1982 May: 100,000 copies of the Course are in print.

1988 July 4: William Thetford, who had attended the Christian Science church during his youth, dies in Tiburon, CA.

1990: There are currently more than 650,000 sets of A Course In Miracles in print.

Growth of the Movement

1986: 630 Study Groups.

1987: 848 Study Groups.

1988: 1,059 Study Groups.

1989: 1,175 Study Groups.

According to The Holy Encounter, "Today we publish lists of study groups in 48 states where there are 1,350 meetings. The only states where we don't know of meetings are South Dakota and Delaware."
