Who Turned The Road Sign?
Chris Barhorst
In a conversation with His disciples, Jesus makes the following statements:
"And whither I do ye know, and the way ye know." Thomas saith unto Him, "Lord we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?" Jesus saith unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me," (John 14:4-6).
In each of these three verses of Scripture the word "way" is stated. Thomas is desiring to know the way to the abode or home of Jesus.
Then in verse six, Jesus makes it known unto him that He (Jesus) is the way unto the Father who resides in heaven.
This is a very interesting word in the original Greek language of the New Testament. It is the Greek work hodos which can be translated not only as "way" but also as "road," "street" or "highway."
Jesus is the only road to the Father in heaven.
But does this mean that everyone acknowledging a belief in Jesus is on the right road to heaven?
In II Corinthians 11:4 the apostle Paul warns believers that an individual could come preaching another Jesus, and another Gospel, which is, of course, motivated by another spirit.
Although there is only one true Jesus, Christians are warned that there would arise some that would preach a counterfeit Jesus.
The true Jesus of the Bible who was not only the Son of God, but actually God the Son or God manifested in human flesh is the one and only road to heaven.
(The deity of Jesus is taught in many passages of Scripture: John 1:1; 1:14; John 8:24; 8:58; Heb. 1:8; Col. 2:9, etc.)
Almost everyone acknowledges some belief in Jesus, but unless He is received in the fullness of His Divinity, mere acknowledgment of a Jesus is not enough.
In Matthew 7:13 and 14 where the Scriptures teach a broad way leading to destruction and a narrow way leading to life, the same Greek word hodos is used for the word "way."
It is a broad road leading to destruction with many people on it, and a narrow road leading to eternal life. A super highway to hell and a narrow country road to heaven.
It appears that even though many people, groups or organizations are claiming a belief in Jesus, not everybody is on the right road. The "Jesus" road sign in many cases has been turned. Even though it says "Jesus" on the road sign, it is the wrong road.
If an individual was to go out and turn a road sign and another was to believe the sign in hopes of arriving at a particular destination, it would make no difference how sincere the person was in their belief of being on the right road, they would never arrive at the desired destination.
Examine the road, not just the road sign, in any particular belief system.
