Jason Smith, The Community of Christ/RLDS Church: How Should it be Viewed by Evangelicals?

With just under 250,000 members, it seems natural to relegate the Community of Christ (aka RLDS Church) to a footnote in discussions about the 12 million member Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Community of Christ today is almost unrecognizable as the successor to its former self. This workshop will examine some of the events that brought about these changes and present some new interpretations of how the LDS/Community of Christ should be viewed by evangelicals today. Includes, a brief historical outline of the history of the RLDS Church and how it has progressed in the Community of Christ and discussion of the significant changes that have taken place and the events and people responsible for them.

Bill McKeever, The Mormon Polygamy Dilemma     

The Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints insists that polygamy no longer plays a role in current Mormon teaching. Is this really true? In this workshop we will examine the history of plural marriage (also known as “the principle”) in the LDS Church and how its practice was considered absolutely essential if a Mormon hoped to be “exalted with the Gods.” We will also examine its official “abandonment” in the late 1800s and the role it plays in the future of many Latter-day Saints.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints claims an exclusive hold on the doctrines which are essential for salvation. At the same time, official LDS doctrine teaches that God is not omniscient and that God offers continuing scriptural revelation to the current leader of the LDS Church. When taken together, these two beliefs about God must lead Latter-day Saints into a relativistic view of truth which necessarily destroys their claims to hold the exclusive keys to salvation. This workshop will examine these LDS and argue that the LDS cannot be considered as bearers of truth.
