Maharishi U

According to the Des Moines Sunday Register, Maharishi International University, in Fairfield, Iowa recieves the largest share of federal grants of all the states private schools.

"According to figures compiled by the National Science Foundation, non-profit, tax-exempt MIU received $2,957,000 in federal grants during 1983 and 1984, over $80,000 more than Drake University," (Cult Observer, January/February 1987 p. 10).

According to an MIU spokesman, "...none (of the funds) are earmarked to research transcendental meditation," the doctrine for which the Maharishi is best known (Ibid).

MIU opened it doors in 1974 when the famous guru from India, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, purchased Parsons College.

In recent years MIU has made nationwide headlines as a result of its sponsoring the "annual International Yogic Flying Competition," (Washington Post, Aug. 18, 1989).

To date no one has flown around the room, but there has been a tremendous amount of "hopping" taking place. At the Fourth Annual IYFC, hopping was described as "merely the first stage," (Ibid).
